ISOGATE™ PLUS
for Microsoft Mail, cc: Mail, Lotus Notes, and SMTP/MIME

Providing Communication Across Incompatible Messaging Systems

The proliferation of multiple, proprietary messaging systems within organizations has created isolated islands of communication where users on one system cannot effectively communicate with users on other, different systems. While one department may have selected Microsoft Mail, another may use Lotus cc:Mail&REG, and yet another may prefer Lotus Notes™. Effectively and transparently enabling communications among all of an organization’s messaging systems, as well as providing links to external communication systems, poses a challenging problem.

ISOGATE Plus gateways solve this problem. By translating messages created using proprietary, vendor-specific messaging systems to an internationally recognized, open standards-compliant format, ISOGATE Plus gateways allow users to exchange electronic information, including attached files such as spreadsheets and word processing documents, amg different messaging systems and across platforms. This cross-communication capability allows for the rapid exchange of information across departments and organizations.

Integrating the Most Popular E-mail Systems
Recognizing that a single organization may utilize multiple messaging products, ISOGATE Plus gateways provide end-to-end connectivity across all the most popular systems. Products in the ISOGATE Plus family include:

  • ISOGATE Plus for MS Mail
  • ISOGATE Plus for cc:Mail
  • ISOGATE Plus for Lotus Notes
  • ISOGATE Plus for SMTP/MIME (Internet mail)

Comprehensive Gateway Solution
Based on ISOCOR’s award-winning technology, ISOGATE Plus products make it possible to translate messages created using disparate e-mail systems to the X.400 format. From this format, messages can be interpreted by any X.400-compliant messaging system or proprietary system linked to an X.400 teway. Benefits of products in the ISOGATE Plus family include:

  • Bi-directional Address Mapping. Sophisticated address mapping provides a common look and feel for e-mail addresses by presenting both local and foreign addresses in the familiar, local format.
  • Simplified Management. Built-in management tools enable remote configuration and administration through a central management center that allows dynamic modification of all attached gateways.
  • Flexibility. Messages of any size with file attachments of almost any type and size are transported quickly, easily, and transparently.
  • Network Connectivity. ISOGATE Plus can be configured to run over a number of network protocols including TCP/IP (Internet) and X.25.
  • Directory Synchronization. Optional directory synchronization modules eliminate address book incompatibilities between proprietary e-mail products.

Single Internet Domain for an Entire Corporate Network
ISOGATE Directory Synchronization Plus for SMTP/MIME takes information from X.500 and puts this intthe address mapping database used by the ISOGATE Plus for SMTP/MIME. This is used to solve the following problem for larger organizations: when connecting to the public Internet, you need to maintain a subdomain architecture reflecting your internal messaging environment with conventional methods. ISOGATE Directory Synchronization Plus for SMTP/MIME allows you to get all your corporate users into one flat SMTP domain regardless of which native e-mail system the users are actually connected to. The benefit is that you can have a much neater addressing schema, and should your users move from one internal mail system to another, there are no modifications needed on your business cards or related corporate collaterals.

Robust Features Provide High Performance and Reliability
Each ISOGATE Plus product has a comprehensive, robust feature set that helps ensure consistent, reliable transmission of messages among heterogeneous e-mail environments and simplifies system administration. Product features include:

  • AdvanceAddress Mapping. Provides a common look and feel for all e-mail addresses by presenting foreign addresses in the local, native format.
  • Automatic Address Book Updates. Enables new e-mail correspondents to be automatically added to individual proprietary address books, simplifying communication among business partners. (Unavailable for Microsoft Mail)
  • Business Card Addressing. Simplifies communication to users of foreign e-mail systems by supporting multiple formats (e.g. Internet addresses or X.400 addresses) in the addressing fields.
  • Multimedia Document Exchange. Allows the interchange of multimedia documents containing video, sound, and graphics among supported third-party e-mail systems, the Internet, and X.400 systems. Multiple documents can be attached to each e-mail message.
  • International Character Support. Includes support for translation of international character sets for maintaining message content and integrity.
  • Native-format Reports and Receipts. Maintains comprehensive reporting mechanis throughout heterogeneous e-mail environments, providing native-format reports to end users.
  • Automatic Fault Notification. Allows an administrator or group of administrators to automatically receive system alarms from any gateway in their personal mailbox.

Advanced Management Features Streamline System Administration
ISOGATE Plus products are equipped with a robust, feature rich management center that provides:

  • Centralized Administration. The management center centralizes all configuration tasks, allowing address mapping, naming translation rules, and site-specific options to be performed on all local and remote gateways from one graphical user interface.
  • Maintenance of Log Files. Individual gateway log files are updated with relevant gateway events and daily message statistics.
  • Dynamic System Updates. All updates occur dynamically and in real time ÐÐ there is no need to shut down and restart established services when changes are made.
  • Administrator-defined Address Mapping Rules. Address mapping is dened by a set of rules triggered during address translation. The system administrator defines these conditions in regular expressions that are combined to form a rule set.
  • Preconfigured Rule Sets. Each ISOGATE Plus product comes with preconfigured rule sets to handle common gateway configurations.

Address Mapping Enhances Integration of Dissimilar Messaging Systems
Different electronic messaging systems have different conventions for specifying and displaying e-mail addresses. For the successful transmission of messages among dissimilar systems, addresses need to be translated, or “mapped,” among the different formats.

From a technology standpoint, address mapping poses a difficult problem. From a user standpoint, address mapping is essential for system usability. Recipients of electronic messages prefer to see the sender’s address displayed in their familiar, local format. They also require the ability to reply to all electronic correspondence, whether it originated locally or remotely, at the click of a button, without having to modify the address field.

ISOGATE Plus products accomplish address mapping through a sophisticated set of rules that:

  • Allow users to view addresses in their local, “native” format
  • Ensure that all messages are “reply-able”
  • Minimize system overhead

Address mapping features are designed to provide maximum flexibility. Specific system advantages include:

  • Domain and User-Specific Mapping Records. For maximum flexibility, address mapping records can be entered for each connected domain (Post Office) plus for individual users.
  • Mapping Rules in a Single Direction. Rules can be configured in one direction, allowing for replies to be routed via other paths.
  • Flexible Domain Mapping Rules. Rules can be configured and combined on domain mappings, allowing appropriate handling of personal name details. For example {G=Joe/S=Clark} can be displayed as either “Joe Clark” or “Clark, Joe” depending on the convention of the local system.

Directory Synchronization Eliminates Address Book Incompatibilities
Directory synchronization is available as an option for Microsoft Mail, Lotus cc:Mail, and Lotus Notes products. The ISOGATE Directory Synchronization Plus options use an X.500-based structure to keep address book changes on LAN-based e-mail systems up-to-date, ensuring that all record additions, deletions, and modifications made within one address book are propagated to all other address books.

ISOGATE Directory Synchronization Plus options include the following features:

  • Sophisticated Filtering Capabilities. Sophisticated filtering capabilities allow the specification of which entries to add to the directory and which to exclude.
  • Built-in Address Mapping. During the address downloading process, address mapping rules are followed, resulting in directories that are populated with addresses in a format consistent with each local system.
  • Control Flow Mechanisms. For larger environments, built-in control flow mechanisms optimize system performance, avoiding conflicts between address book dowoads and system updates.
  • Automated Directory Updates. Automatic synchronization schedules can be configured, allowing directory updates to occur at specified times and on specified days. Using this option, costs can be mimimized by performing updates during off-peak hours.
  • Consistent Look and Feel. The same configuration utility is used for all ISOGATE Directory Synchronization Plus options, providing a common look and feel that simplifies system set-up and maintenance.
