ISOTRADE ACCESS UNIT FOR X.435/P2

ISOTRADE is an Access Unit (AU) which allows applications to easily transmit messages via X.400. The complexity of X.400 is hidden from applications through the use of a simple file programmatic interface (FPI), allowing applications to be quickly written to send and receive X.435 (EDI) and X.420 (interpersonal) messages. EDI applications can transfer interchanges that conform to EDIFACT, ANSI X.12, or UN/TDI standards - proprietary EDI formats can also be supported. ISOTRADE converts these into X.400 messages using either the X.435 (Pedi also called P35) or X.420 (P2) specifications.

X.435 - Global EDI
X.435 is a set of recommendations for EDI messaging within the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) architecture for data communications defined by ITU (formerly known as CCITT). It defines the X.435 content protocol for the structure and transmission of EDI messages via X.400 networks.

Simple Interface to Applications
Applications communicate with ISOTRADE via a simple but powerful File Programmatic Interface (FPI) using a shared file system. The application places an FPI file into the appropriate queue on the file system. ISOTRADE then reads the file from this queue, creates an X.400 envelope and encloses the data as either an X.435 or X.420 content, according to the protocol expected by the recipient system.

Powerful Acknowledgments
Recipients of X.435-generated messages can return special EDI notifications indicating their responsibility for the message (when requested). This notifcation not only indicates that the message was received and understood, but also whether the recipient accepts (positive notification) or rejects (negative notification) responsibility for it.

Mulitple Applications
ISOTRADE not only gives connectivity to X.400 for a single application, but can be configured to handle multiple applications simultaneously. ISOTRADE polls each applicationŐs queue, processing messages as required. Incoming X.400 messages are processed according to priority, and routed to the relevant application through the file programmatic interface. ISOTRADE will
automatically generate X.400 delivery reports or non-delivery reports as required. It can also be configured to automatically generate positive EDI notifications, or leave this responsibility to the application.

User Features

  • Support for X.435 and X.420. Users can be configured for the relevant content type which they support.
  • Simple Interface to Applications. EDI interchanges are submitted and received via the file programmatic interface.
  • Multiple recipient support. Through extending the file programmatic interface (FPI), messages may be sent to multiple recipients.
  • Multiple body-part support. Each X.435 and X.420 message can include multiple bodyparts.
  • EDIFACT parser. The parser gives detailed information on where the EDIFACT parsing error occured.
  • Detailed logging. ISOTRADE includes five logging levels, including FPI and X.400 tracing.
  • Submission Confirmation. ISOTRADE can be configured to send submission reports back to the sending application when it generates and submits its X.400 message.
  • Notification and delivery reports. EDI applications can request EDI notifications and delivery reports on a per-recipient basis.
  • Deferred and Latest Delivery Time. Applications can specify the time before which and the time after which a message should be delivered.
  • Obsolete and Related Cross References. Applications can indicate if a specific message obsoletes or relates to a previous message.
  • UNIX/DOS and DOS/UNIX file mapping. ISOTRADE can be
configured to map file names in the FPI from UNIX to DOS, or from DOS to UNIX. This allows for EDI applications on DOS to easily communicate with ISOTRADE on a UNIX platform, via a mounted file system.
  • Auto Address Saving. ISOTRADE can be configured to automatically add unknown addresses to the address book

Configuration
ISOTRADE comes complete with a powerful configuration utility which allows for easy configuration and maintenence. This utility can be used to register new applications for which ISOTRADE will send and receive X.400 messages. ISOTRADE's personal address book can also be updated. Connection to the Message Transfer Agent (MTA) is done through the shared file system.

Standards Conformance
ITU X.200, X.209, X.400 (1988), X.411, X.420, X.435. ISO 9735
