N-PLEX supports prevailing desktop clients for
intranet applications and Internet access.
High-Performance Internet Mail
Services
The N-PLEX Internet Mail Services include an Internet (SMTP) Mail
server and an integrated POP3/IMAP4 message store to support the
leading Internet applications. The single, integrated message
store provides transparent access and seamless migration for POP3
and IMAP4 clients. The IMAP4 features include support for synchronization
with off-line mobile clients, extensive text searching facilities,
and shared folder support.
The Internet Mail Services provide support for
standard Internet text message formats, as well as Multipurpose
Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) for rich text format and multimedia
message types, such as word processing files, spreadsheets, graphics,
audio and video images. N-PLEX supports the most recent SMTP extensions,
including Delivery Status Notifications (DSN) for delivery confirmations
and Command Pipelining for acceleration of SMTP message exchanges
between servers.
Centralized Management and
Web-Based Administration
For centralized and remote administration of the N-PLEX environment,
the ISOCOR Management Center provides an easy-to-use graphical
interface for installing, managing and configuring N-PLEX applications
and services. The ISOCOR Management Center also provides fault
notification, log file analysis, and performance and event monitoring.
The Web-based administration facilities include
Java applets for routine administration tasks and allows users
to view their account status, change passwords, and create auto-reply
and vacation reply messages.
For audit and control purposes, log files record
details of user sessions and report on system utilization. Performance-monitoring
facilities provide extensive statistics on message transfer rates,
connection activity, message delivery and gateway performance.
Diagnostic tools such as trace logging provide detailed information
on session activity to assist administrators in resolving system
problems.
Extensive remote management facilities provide
the ability for administrators to manage multiple N-PLEX servers
in remote locations simultaneously from a central management station,
and include remote installation and configuration capabilities.
The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and SNMP Management
Information Base (MIB) are supported by N-PLEX for monitoring
network and status information. Third-party SNMP management centers
can monitor N-PLEX services and trigger alarms or alerts.
Built-In Security Features
N-PLEX provides built-in security features
such as multilevel access control for protecting configuration
information, POP3 APOP authentication, and detailed system logs
for audit and control purposes. APOP provides password encryption
for POP3 users utilizing a one-time encryption key, and MD5-CRAM
provides this functionality for IMAP4 users. This prevents theft
of password information and protects against replay of message
traffic.
Directory Services
N-PLEX provides both LDAP Internet Directory Services and a product
option for the N-PLEX Global Directory Server to meet the needs
of environments where X.500 directories are utilized to store
and access information. The LDAP Internet Directory Services include
an integrated LDAP Server that allows you to import SMTP address
information into the directory automatically. To meet the diverse
needs of organizations, the Web/Directory gateway (HTTP to LDAP/X.500)
allows users with standard Web browsers to access LDAP Directory
services and X.500 Directory services (via the ldapd interface).
The N-PLEX Global Directory Server provides a
full 1993 X.500-conformant Directory System Agent (DSA) which
includes support for replication, shadowing and access control.
Replication provides the ability for directories to appear on
multiple DSAs, which can improve performance and reduce communications
costs. The access control features allows information to be restricted
by type of user to enhance directory information management.
The
ISOCOR Management Center provides performance monitoring and intuitive
diagnostics for NPLEX applications.
Robust X.400 Mail Services
For environments where X.400 mail services are
required, the N-PLEX X.400 Mail Server and Gateway option provides
a message transfer agent (MTA) and SMTP/MIME-X.400 gateway. The
X.400 MTA transfers messages to other X.400 MTAs using the 1988
X.400 P1 (server to server) protocol, and complies with ITU-T
1984, 1988 and 1992 X.400 recommendations.
Additional N-PLEX X.400 options include an X.400
Message Store and X.400 Access Control. The X.400 P7 message store
can be used with X.400 user agents from ISOCOR and other standards-based
suppliers. The X.400 Access Control module allows an administrator
to specify which users can send and receive mail through the MTA,
limit message sizes, and configure other mail service and access
parameters.
Accounting
N-PLEX Accounting is an optional component that
can be used by organizations or service providers who wish to
track SMTP and X.400 messaging and usage information. N-PLEX Accounting
provides a detailed log of accounting information for messages
passing through the N-PLEX Internet Mail server, X.400 Mail server
(MTA), message stores, and the Internet/X.400 gateway. This service
is configurable, allowing storage, processing and other cost-relevant
data to be formatted into an ASCII file and easily imported into
databases and customized billing applications.
Application Programming Interfaces
- Message Filtering API. Provides filtering
and processing of SMTP messages by another program.
- Mail Agent API. Allows the development
of mail agents to carry out actions described in the message
and return results in a reply message.
- Submission API. Enables platform and
language-independent Internet Mail access.
- Gateway API. Allows the attachment of
external gateways for message conversion.
Additionally, PLEXLINK POP3 Provider, a MAPI POP3
service provider, enhances the ability of NÐPLEX servers to integrate
into existing environments where proprietary MAPI-based mail clients
may be in use. This allows POP3 connectivity for MAPI-based clients
such as Exchange, Outlook, cc:Mail® and GroupWise.
