Product Description

High voltage transients caused by lightning or other electrical disturbances have the ability to disrupt and destroy high speed communications circuits. Considering the importance of T1 and 56KB switched services protection against environmental phenomena is a must.

The Model 22T1 and 2256 Lightning Sponges are designed to accommodate threats caused by lightning, slow them down and redirect them to a low impedance path to earth ground.The Model 22T1/56 Lightning Sponges are modules that provide protection for four independent data communication circuits that may be exposed to such transients. The protection circuits incorporate 3 separate stages for limiting high voltage transients. Gas tubes, avalanche diodes and zener clamp diodes. The DC series resistance is limited to approximately 5 Ohms for the 2256 and 25 Ohms for the 22T1. The response time for both is measured in nanoseconds. The output voltage is limited to ±5 Volts for the Model 22T1 and ±3 Volts for the Model 2256.

These devices provide RJ-45 type modular connectors for easy installation of the 4-wire lines. For both models, an additional screw terminal is provided to make the connection to earth ground. This wire should be at least #12 gauge or larger and be as short as possible. It will conduct the surge to earth ground (power ground or water pipe).

Models 22T1HV & 2256HV

The HV option provides protection at ± 60 Volts therby allowing operation on Telco lines that use -48 Volt signalling to control diagnostic features of the Telco equipment.
