Product Description
WDM is a technique in which different streams of data can be transmitted
on the same fiber optic cable. This is accomplished by having them carried
at different wavelengths. This contrasts with conventional fiber optic
systems in which just one stream of data is carried over a relatively
narrow bandwidth window. A WDM is an optical coupler that can split
and combine signals with different optical wavelengths. Being passive
it has very high reliability.
The Models 381/2381 are passive, single mode, wavelength division multiplexers
that allow the doubling of the data carrying capacity of a fiber pair.
The WDM allows combining and separating of individual wavelengths,
thus allowing the individual channels to be simultaneously transmitted
over
the same fiber optic cable. The WDM requires the attached devices to
provide the necessary wavelengths. The WDM is completely protocol
and
speed independent. Both analog and digital applications can be transmitted
simultaneously on the same fiber. WDM can merge data, voice, video
or
any other electrical signals together on a single fiber. Typical applications
include CATV and digital telecommunications carrier system. Furthermore,
it can be used as inter office service channel monitoring and perform
out-of-band network management.
The Model 381 is the standalone unit while the Model 2381 is the rack
mounted version that is hosted by Telebyte's Model 2200 Card Cage.
Both
units are totally passive. The WDM's utilize the fused biconic taper
concept which feature high isolation, low insertion loss and reflectance
over a wide range of temperature and mechanical stresses.
Each of the configurations is available with a choice of connectors,
ST, SC or FC.
