Product Description
The Model 904 provides the capability of a high performance data line
monitor, bit error rate tester and emulator in a small configuration
that supports all PC's. Its size makes the Model 904 perfect for a notebook
computer. The combination produces a powerful protocol analyzer. The
Model 904 PC Comscope addresses the most important concern which has
limited the use of PC based protocol analyzers: The need to open up
your PC to install an expansion board. The 904 installs easily - just
connect the cable to one of the serial ports on any PC and you're ready
to go. This ease of installation makes the 904 ideal for both lab and
field use. In the field the 904 will run for 3 hours on a standard 9V
battery, making it a perfect addition to your field service toolkit.
For the lab, the 904 includes an A/C adapter for continuous operation.
The Model 904 PC Notebook Comscope is the latest addition to Telebyte's
line of powerful and flexible PC based protocol analyzers. It provides
complete functionality without requiring an internal PC expansion slot.
The Comscope features a friendly, menu driven, interface. The versatility
of the Model 904 is unlimited with the included Protocol Emulator Program
Interface (PEPI). With PEPI you can select either our off-the-shelf
test analysis programs or write your own. PEPI allows you to get the
answers YOU need, not those the manufacturer thought you needed. Operation
of the 904 is under control of a program running on the PC. The Model
904 supports most WAN protocols including Asynchronous and Synchronous.
The synchronous capability includes Bisync and IPARS, and Bit Oriented
protocols such as SDLC, SNA, and X.25. The Model 904 captures the whole
picture: Data, control leads, time stamps and error conditions. This
enables you to do extensive post-capture analysis of data, even at a
different location. You can trap or search for any combination of these
events, and not just data strings.
The Model 904 opens a window on the wire to give you the confidence
of knowing exactly what is happening in your data circuits. While small
in size the 904 is high in performance. A co-processor enables it to
monitor data lines on a full duplex basis to 64 KBPS and emulate up
to 64 KBPS (486DX or faster machines). The Model 904 uses the PC's com
port as the communications link between the resources of the PC and
the microprocessor inside of the Model 904.User access to the Model
904 is via a DB25 male connector on the rear panel. A DB9 female connector
is provided to access the PC. Telebyte also supplies a DB9 to DB25 adapter
to allow converting either of the connectors to the other.A front panel
switch group allows selection of monitoring or emulation of either DTE
or DCE configurations and a power switch. Eight status LED's display
TD, RD, RTS, CTS, DSR, DCD, DTR and RI. The RS- 232 electrical interface
is standard, with other interfaces ordered separately.
Emulate Mode
Emulate Mode offers a powerful emulation facility by virtue of its "State
Programming" technique.Four entries, or fields, are required for
each instruction. The first is the instruction number called State;
more than one instruction can have the same state number. The second
field is called Wait For, which allows a specific condition to be waited
for. The Action field specifies the action to be taken when the wait-for
condition occurs. The last field called Next State is used much like
the "GO TO" statement in a BASIC computer program by moving
the test to a new state.
Pull Down Menus
Pull down menus make the PC Comscope the ultimate in simplicity for
the operator. Built-in HELP screens also assist the inexperienced user.
The PC Comscope operates in ASYNC, SYNC, HDLC or in a mode called UNKNOWN
whereby any serial data can be accepted and deciphered.
The Power Trap Menu
Your host is mysteriously disconnecting a certain terminal sometime
during the night. Every few hours your PAD gets a CMDR citing invalid
packet numbering. The PC Comscope trap facility is designed to diagnose
problems like these. You specify certain conditions (not just data strings)
and when they appear the PC Comscope will freeze the data. You can examine
activity before and after and then use the trap menu to search for various
possibilities.
PC Resources
The Model 904 has access to all of the resources of the PC such as disk
drives, displays and printers. In the Data Journal mode, data is saved
to DOS files for later viewing, analysis and printing.
Portability Package
The Model 904 PC Notebook Comscope is supplied with a convenient padded
case to simplify carrying the unit and its accessories. This feature
really makes the Comscope portable.
