Application NoteSun Server Serial Console Management
The Western Telematic CPM6400 is an ideal and economical means of controlling multiple Sun Servers via the RS-232 Console Port on each Sun. The CPM6400 is a true RS-232 any-to-any matrix switch which can be used to connect multiple Sun Servers through their RS-232 Console Control Port for management access from a common terminal. Using one or multiple local terminals, operators can connect to the Sun Console Ports by entering simple connect commands. The CPM unit is a true any-to-any matrix switch, allowing any number of terminals to access any number of servers for complete matrix connectivity, up to a total of 64 ports.
The CPM6400 also has the ability to buffer data during non connect periods. This allows operators to receive buffered screen dumps from each port during their next connection. If the Server sends any error messages or other vital information during a non-connect period, this data will be stored in port-specific buffers in the CPM6400 and will be output to the terminal screen the next time an operator connects to the server port. The CPM6400 includes an on-screen matrix display of all ports connected to the CPM6400. Ports can be given specific names, port speeds and coding. All parameters are port-specific, and are held in the CPM6400's SRAM. The CPM6400 also includes advanced features like: no-data activity disconnect (time-out), password protection on individual ports, third party connect or disconnect and on-screen help menus. The CPM6400 also includes two ports designed specifically for modem access. This allows remote managers to dial into the equipment room, and connect to the Sun Server ports using standard terminal emulation software. The CPM6400's modem ports are password protected, and include user programmable AT reset and log-off commands in the event of modem connection failure. The CPM6400 fits into a standard 19" equipment rack, and it's modular 8-port serial card design allows configuration of 8 to 64 ports. The CPM6400 includes convenient RJ interface, and optional RJ to DB-25F splitters are also available. The unit is also ideal for local or remote out-of-band management of any network control equipment which has an RS-232 management port.
