CPS 1610 Appliance

The 16-port Avocent CPS1610 appliance delivers secure, serial over IP access to console ports of servers and serially-managed devices such as power management systems, network hubs and routers.

Console port server features such as offline history buffering and hardware break suppression distinguish the Avocent CPS appliance from simplistic terminal servers, which are often misused for this purpose.

Features and Benefits

CPS units, and attached devices, can be centrally managed using Avocent DSView 3 software. They can also be accessed in a stand-alone manner using third-party software or Avocent vConsole® management software. These methods are designed to meet the needs of data centers of all sizes.

The CPS appliance is also available in an 8-port model.

Large Data Center Application
In large data centers, the CPS serial over IP appliance may be configured to work in unison with the DSR™, SPC and other Avocent switches and appliances. When attached to the KVM, serial and power ports of devices within a data center, the Avocent appliances enable administrators to manage those devices through local access at the rack or by remote access via KVM over IP connections.

Small to Mid-sized Data Center Application

For small to mid-sized data centers, the CPS unit may be configured for stand-alone operation. In this mode, the CPS serial over IP solution can be used in conjunction with third-party Telnet and/or SSH client software for secure console port management. User accounts and permissions may be stored within the CPS unit or on an external RADIUS server.

Note: DSView 3 software is sold separately.

Software Features
  • Complete KVM, Serial and Power Management Solution: Works in unison with the DSR, SPC and other Avocent switches and appliances to enable administrators to manage a wide range of data center devices through local access at the rack or by remote access through KVM over IP connections.
  • Centralized Management: Avocent DS management software coordinates remote access to DS appliances, and attached devices, in a centralized manner. The software suite consists of the DSView® software client; the DSAuth central authentication, access control, audit server, and administration for DS user accounts and appliances. DSWebview provides browser-based users with a secure gateway into the DS environment. Avocent DS management software is sold separately.
  • Security: The CPS appliance offers internal and external user authentication methods and port-specific access rights.
  • Ease of Access: Avocent DS management software provides an explorer function that presents your servers within an intuitive graphical user interface, allowing you to locate and access your critical resources via a simple mouse click. With support for custom labels and icons, it is no longer necessary to recall cryptic machine names or IP addresses.
  • Avocent Telnet Client: Compatible with third-party SSH and Telnet clients. The CPS appliance comes complete with an Avocent Java-based Telnet client. The supplied Telnet client offers file-based session logging, cut and paste, print screen, session history, macro support and a wide range of terminal emulations.
  • Browser Access: DSWebview combines ease of Internet access with central security and management.
  • Scalable: The CPS appliance architecture is scalable rather than stackable; there are no restrictions on the number of DS appliances that can be added to an installation.
  • Non-blocked Access: The CPS appliance architecture supports simultaneous sessions to all serial ports.

Hardware Features
  • Solaris Ready: Hardware break suppression ensures uninterrupted operation of your Solaris server even if power is lost to the CPS appliance.Break Generation: Hardware break may be intentionally generated via Telnet or SSH clients.
  • Port History: Port history functionality includes offline buffering, string search and various modes to save or clear onboard history buffers.
  • Direct Port Addressing: Sessions may be established directly to any CPS appliance port by using SSH to bypass the CPS command line interface.

Customers agree: The CPS serial over IP appliance makes it easier to upgrade and reconfigure their data center:
"The Avocent CPS appliance allows our administrators to manage servers, Cisco routers and switches, APC MasterSwitches and other console-enabled devices from local workstations or remote monitoring stations. The vConsole software was incredibly easy to install and provides us with a single application for combined Telnet and Web-based management."
