LAN TAP provides a convenient RS-232 path between two RS-232 devices over EIA/TIA-568 10BASE-T LAN cabled networks at distances up to 10,000 feet. They are normally used to connect two RS-232 devices together that do not have LAN interfaces eliminating the need to pull an additional cable or use an expensive terminal server.
The LAN TAPs operate in pairs. They "Tap" into the LAN cable at each end and provide a separate signal path between the two devices over the unused cable pairs, while allowing the LAN traffic to operate concurrently. A special filter is employed to minimize cross talk within the cable.
On polled networks, many of these paths, from diverse locations, can be brought back to the polling host and connected to a single port via a CPS Modem Sharing Device. This concept can also be used at remote locations to allow networked PCs to access the host via their serial ports and modems instead of a bridge/router. This concept may also be considered to provide a RS-232 backup path to the Host, even with a primary bridge/router connection.
Because the LAN TAP uses the physical layer of the LAN network, it does not operate directly through logical devices such as HUBs, repeaters, bridges or routers. In the event that this is a requirement, a By-Pass TAP adaptor can be used to by-pass the logical device. It provides a direct copper link around the logical unit while allowing the LAN signals to pass through it.
Several models are available that are compatible with standard Ethernet, Token Ring or Unisys CTOS/BTOS, Cluster or TeleCluster twisted pair cabled network (with CPS HUBs) and with CPS active patch panel HUBS for TDI or RS-232.
