Introduction
The MODEM ROUTER SWITCH (MRS) allows inbound modem calls to be switched to any of 4 or 8 user selected receiving modems (PCs, Servers, etc.). Although the switch was designed primarily for modem applications, it can be used for voice, fax, or other analog switching applications or even used to reboot your PC when the optional power adaptor is used.
Theory of Operation
The "switch to port" is selected by the caller when the call is placed. This is accomplished through one of the two primary operating modes provided by the MRS; the TOUCH-TONE and SECURE modes. The mode is selected through a rotary switch on the MRS.
The TOUCH-TONE MODE is a simple DTMF tone method of port selection. The caller simply enters a password and the number of the port to which they wish to connect. This can be accomplished manually from any touch tone key pad or by appending it to the "AT Command" in a dial string for dial modem applications.
The SECURE MODE involves a match box size Security Selector Key with an eight position rotary switch that is connected to the callers modem. It provides two functions; (1) it performs an encrypted handshake with the MRS and then (2) automatically switches the call to the selected port. When the MRS is operating in this mode, any inbound calls that are received without the security device are aborted within a half second.
The Security Key is programmed by connecting it to the MRS and programming the allowable ports for the device. Note that each device may be programmed differently allowing only selected ports to be accessed by various units. Each MRS has a unique factory system ID code and a user selected ID. They are transferred to the Key during programming. This prevents the key from being used on other systems.
Optional Intelligent AC Power Strip
In the event that the device(s) on the "switched to" port is not required to be under constant power, an AC Power Strip (6 AC outlets) can be installed at the terminal/modem. 2, 4, or 6 of the outlets on the AC Power Strip may be designated as "controlled outlets" at the time of order. The others may be used as "normal" AC Power Strip outlets.
The AC Power Strip will automatically power on when the port is selected and remove power when the call is completed. The AC Power Strip also recognizes additional touch-tone override commands that can be used to override the automatic on/off feature. The strip also includes an AC surge protection.
For easy installation, all of the ports have standard RJ-11 telephone style connectors.
